Luckin Coffee and the Cashierless Experience: Will Starbucks Fall to greater Efficency?

Luckin Coffee is already offering cheaper coffees than Starbucks. How do they achieve this? By having a Cashierless experience.

The Cashier job still has millions of positions across America. It had its modern beginnings in the late 19th Century with the invention of the cash register, allowing for store owners to have easy access to a machine to count the day's earnings in sales without needing to constantly keep track of everything. As time when on, they merged with the rising power and efficiency of integrated circuits, allowing for the creation of POS(Point of Sale) systems. Being a cashier had never been easier, except for many youths who were unable to count the change.

Luckin Coffee, much like many upscale retail experiences in China is being driven by the fact that China is young when it comes to selling Coffee. China for many centuries was a tea drinking civilization and coffee only recently became more popular. China allows for greater amounts of experimentation while America, with its "Corporate welfare" is stagnating to bring new ideas into the limelight. Such limitations are hurting America's ability to compete with China. We simply have too many established businesses that do not want to see any change in our culture.

Luckin Coffee established itself into a city that actually bans Cashierless businesses. What this means is that Luckin is probably following the McDonalds method; they have kiosks, but cashiers are still available.

While this maybe annoying for the Chinese who have to make their business less efficient in order to satisfy American tastes, it is pragmatic move which helps get into America.

Not having Cashiers is quite an important move. It means that Luckin can focus on the making of Coffee. I think that such businesses are going to be more popular in the future, and I expect that America is going to be getting more competition from a newly tech-savvy China.
