Why I support Winsome Sears
Why I support Winsome Sears
It is another Governor's race, and it seem that history does not move. In this age, it appears as if we are in a constant remake of the same political races just as movie studios are not making any original movies. After many years since World War 2, it seems that culture is beginning to change and that maybe imagination will return to our country again. We need it now more than ever before. Winsome Sears is signifying that change. In a state that often was worshipping big government, Winsome Sears can be a breath of fresh air and continue the change Governor Younkin has brought to the state.
Virginia is a special state and while I sometimes complain that it is boring at times, there is no where like the Mother of Presidents, as this state used to be known as. Maybe it can be known for more than just big government but for the revitalization of the American spirit.
While that may sound naive to some people, I think that it is absolutely possible here. For many years, people have treated Virginia as basically the vassal state of the government. The ROVA(Rest of Virginia) was being ignored. The time has come for that to change.
In 2021, while Joe Biden was basically running on autopilot as others were wielding the pen, Republicans smartly chose Glenn Youngkin as our candidate. Winsome Sears has served the governor well and I think that it is time we have her step up to the plate and give Virginia what it needs; a female black governor who can break the stereotypes of the Solid Black voter. Blacks need to move away thinking in racial ways and approach politics through what will make America stronger through the generations rather than obsessing about cultural issues that should remain in the 1960s. That time for many Blacks is one that they wish was still in the 1960s and that there were three tv channels that would constantly praise them as the greatest citizens. That is no longer the case in America.
There is a tendency that Black women need to vote only for the other party but women such Winsome Sears show that there is another path that is open. It is path that seeks to move away from the old orthodoxies of the past and embrace new things without losing the respect for the past. Winsome Sears' story is nothing short of amazing and exemplifies the American dream in a remarkable way that we need more of in this cynical age.
We need to move on from race-baiting and treating races as monolithic, opaque entities. We need to treat people according to their actions not the skin color. My parents are St. Lucian, so I am a Caribbean -American. However, me being a Caribbean is not important here. I am an American citizen.
She came from Jamaica with her father in the 1960s. She is not a native born African American but a Caribbean-American. She became a marine and served honorably in our nation's military.
She became the first Black Republican in a Black majority district since the Civil War era and in that time became the LT. Governor of Virginia.
She has an impressive resume and that alone makes me want to vote for her. I have been generally a person who thinks outside the box. Winsome Sears appeals to me with being a Black woman who is not asking for handouts but is trying to make Virginia better than when she first elected to the office.
What is important to remember is that Winsome Sears represents the future of America. The other woman, who I am not naming is just another politician. While that may sound cliche, Winsome Sears is unique in many ways.
Winsome Sears did not complain about not having wealth or privilege; she gained it through actions rather screaming about it. That is what makes her amazing here. Her deeds speak louder than words and that is enough for me to vote for her.
